If the binomial is a factor, then the root will be true

 

Example    x+2     has the root x=-2  sub in -2        -8 +4 +32-16   does not equal 0     not a factor

example     x+1     Has the root   x = -1  sub in -1   -1+1+16-16 = 0     Is a factor
