I have tried time and time again, and I can't seem to get the correct answer.

We know total area is 16, so lets base our equations on that.

Area Sq1:2.0 miles * [ x + (x - 1)] --> 2 * (2x - 1)

Area Sq2:1.2 miles * x

 

Area Sq1 + Area Sq2 = 16:

2 * (2x - 1) + 1.2x = 16

        4x - 2 + 1.2x = 16

                     5.2x = 18

                          x = 45/13 (exact answer) or 3.46 (rounded)
