If we let 'x' equal the number of adult tickets then 8-x is the number of kid tickets. Te revenue from adult tickets would be $8 times x and the revenue from kid tickets would be $3 times 8-x. Summed together the revenues would equal $ 33. Then you solve for 'x' the number of adult tickets and 8-x the number of kid tickets.

Its just a subscript to denote a difference in terms..... like x1 is different than the second x or x2 , it doesn't imply any mathematical calculation like x2 does (x squared.....or x * x )
