2x +3y = 9   (1)

x - y = 2     add y to both sides  → x =  2 + y     (2)

Sub ( 2) into ( 1)

2 ( 2 + y)  + 3y  =  9     simplify

4 + 2y + 3y  =  9

5y + 4  =  9       subtract  4 from each side

5y  =  5             divide both sides by 5

y = 1
