how do you get rid of 40 in a problem like 12x times 40 eqauls 22
The equation would be:
12x*40=22
You are solving for x, aren't you?
12x*40 would be the same as (12*40)(x), which is 480x.
So now the equation is 480x=22
Divide both sides by 480 to get x.

How many cents in an hour?
If you mean how many seconds in an hour, that would be 60*60 because there are 60 seconds in a minute, and 60 minutes in an hour:)

Six more than 4 times a whole number is less than 60. Find the maximum value of the number.
So first, write out the equation with x as the whole number.
That would be:
6+4x<60
then, subtract 6 from both sides.
4x<54
Now divide by 4; since it is a positive number, no need to flip the inequality symbol.
x<13.5
But since the problem states that x is a whole number, try figuring out the maximum: the greatest whole number that is still under 13.5

TalksAlot Company's has a monthly fee of $25 plus $0.50 a minute. ChatAway company's plan charges a $30 dollar fee plus $0.25 per minute.
Write equations to model this situation.
Hi Zweto,
This is a lot like the system of equations problem from yesterday.
First, make the number of minutes x, and the total costs y.
So for example,
If I write TalksAlot's plan with x, then it would be:
y = 0.5x + 25.
See if you can finish with ChatAway's plan:)

the equation for a line through the points (12, -8) and (-4,-40)
So first, find the slope, m.
Slope would be the change in y over the change in x.
slope formula: m = [y1 - y2] / [x1 - x2]
So slope would be (-8 - -40) / (12- -4)
Which would be 2.
Then, plug in the slope and a point into the point-slope formula:
y – y
1
= m(x – x
1
)
so if you use the first point:
y – -8 = 2(x – 12)
y+8=2(x-12)
Distribute the 2, and move the 8 to the right side to get y=

The store sells fiction books for $0.75 each and non-fiction books for $1.50. Today he spent $12.00 on books on 10 books.
So let x = the number of fiction books,
and let y = the number of nonfiction books.
Since there are two variables, you need two equations:
one for the cost, and one for the number of books.
cost:
0.75x + 1.5y = 12
and number:
x + y = 10
Using elimination, try to get rid of one of the variables by adding/subtracting the equations.
You can try to eliminate y by first multiplying the 1st equation by 2 and the 2nd equation by 3, then subtracting them:)

Dear poopie,
You are not Elsa. Just don't.
Hey Serjio,
Don't make it awkward. You can still try talking to her,
maybe start with easier topics like common interests, school, or complaining about classes and homework.
And if you mess up and say something wrong, you can laugh it off, or just say something like, "Sorry, I can't get my thoughts straight when I'm talking to cute girls"
Or something like that.
Just chill. You'll be alright:)
