You are certainly correct that the one who gets the money quicker gets the better deal.

This question is ambiguous but the way I interprete is that the first one gets 100000 each year for 10 years.

The second one gives 100000 the first year then more each subsequent year until the whole 1 million dollars has been received.

So the second one gives the money faster and is the better deal. :)

This question makes no sense.

Rates are change in one unit in relation to change in another unit.  Like mile per hour  (distance traveled over time taken)

you have given no units at all!

If you emptied the bucket on to the land I think that it would immediately work it way back into th ocean. So the ocean would never empty.

I developed my rates method when I was teaching maths for nurses.

They have really horrible rates questions.

drops per minute, dose per weight, ml/drop, and a million other rates all have to worked out in combination with each other.  It gets really tricky.

 My method deals with these hard questions really effectively and it  can be done with no understanding of algebra!  

Of course nurses ultimately use stupid 'formulas'.  They are stupid because they don't make sense.  But people learn to use them by rote,  they 'formulas' work and they have been used for a long time, so I guess my method will never seriously catch on :((   What a pity :((
