I am never sure whether a power of a third means 'to the power of 3' or to the 'power of 1/3'

After all, if you occupy the third spot in a queue you are number 3 in the queue.

If the sides of two similar figures have the ratio of  \(1:\frac{10}{3}\)

Then the area of the 2 figures have the ratio of

    \(1^2:\frac{10^2}{3^2}\\ 1:\frac{100}{9}\)

That is of course the small one to the large one, you asked for it the other way around so the sides need to be swapped.

how do you simplify ^3 * square root of 48

I think perhaps that the question is the cubed root of 48 ??

\(\sqrt[3]{48}=\sqrt[3]{8*6}=\sqrt[3]{8}\sqrt[3]{6}=2\sqrt[3]{6}\)

This is in scientific notation (or standard notation if you are from the United Kingdom)

the 5 indicates that the decimal point must be moved 5 places.

The - with the 5 indicates that this is a really little number so the point gets moved in the direction to make the number smaller, that is, to the left.

I really depends on where you saw it.

If you saw it stand alone then Yes it is probably an empty set just like CPhill said.    

But parentheses are used for other things too.

Like in LaTex, the arguments of a function are indicated by putting them in parentheses :)
